I was not a new nurse, but moving into critical care made me feel new again. This guide respected what I already knew while helping me organize ICU-specific equipment, patterns, and priorities. It was the refresher I needed without reading another enormous textbook.

The emergency section does not pretend a book can run a crisis for you. What it does well is teach the sequence behind the response—what is dangerous first, what to recognize, and what usually comes next. That made emergency situations feel less mysterious.

Drips finally started making sense when I stopped trying to memorize them as disconnected drug classes. Seeing them organized by the clinical goal helped me understand why one might be selected and what needs closer monitoring.

I kept this beside me throughout orientation and used it to review whatever I encountered that week. It helped me arrive with better questions for my preceptor instead of saying, ‘I don’t understand any of this.’ That alone improved my confidence.

I often review one section before a shift or after caring for an unfamiliar condition. The pages are focused enough to use in short study sessions, which is far more realistic for me than committing to a full chapter after working twelve hours.
